PLANS

The fourth year assignment was to explore a research question through various iterative design methods. The responses were to be transformed and materialised into a concrete proposal that included cross-programming of a bakery and contemporary art gallery. This was to question the notions of concept and experience, space and use, while offering unprecedented combinations of programme and space.

Response: The moment of affect is the undefinable transitional space between two atmospheres. It was the desire of this project to investigate what occurs within this space? How can you occupy and experience this affect moment in a three dimensional sense?

A texture/form was extruded up from layers found within one particular affect image. The 'affect texture was to be experienced in three scales. The scale of the texture is determined by the type of interaction that occurs between programmes.

The floor plans demonstrate the physical separation of the buildings programmes. This allows for the affect texture to fester within these in-between spaces. An experience of this transition space is created between programmes. The images produced are ephemeral due to the undefinable nature of affect, mixed media (acrylic paint, digital, photography), structure and texture allow the occupier to visually sense the programme clash/interaction and experience the overwhelming, undefinable, affect.

The section imagedescribes the ephemeral qualities of the Affect texture. It is seen how throughout the 'in-between' moments (outlined in red). These moments change scales due to the programmatic clashes that occur.

The structure of the building is so that the affect texture can weave in and out. This allows for a realistic view of how the affect could be applied as a building skin.

The plans are seen to be physically separated in order to facilitate the transitional spaces between programmes. In plan it is clear to see how the programmes clash and how the separation allows for the realisation of the programme changes.
