THE LATTICE

This second year project was a result of a brief set in Newtown, Wellington. The brief required for an increase in community buildings, while also providing a small train station within the suburban centre.

The design of this lattice canopy was inspired by the large amount of graffiti found within Newtown's suburban centre. The fluid pillars were to support the lattice canopy. However, it was also the desire that these pillars would be positioned strategically throughout the streets, at the moments where the highest graffiti offences were recorded.

The lattice structure became more of an urban project than a singular architectural built project. The concept was to bring awareness of the graffiti issues within Newtown. However, also inspiring vibrance and community. The lattice structure is seen to stretch from Newtown school through to the designed train station and community hub.

These images present the lattice as architecture that can mould into children's playgrounds as well as seating outside of the school entrance.

The Lattice structure creates ever-changing shadows that produce an interesting active nature to the architecture. Bike stands are incorporated into the structure and the train station (bottom left image) is vibrant and utilises the flexibility of the structure.

The community hub is positioned on the second floor which links with other buildings (cafe's/bar) across the street through a glass-lined bridge.

As a conceptual idea, the lattice successfully brings an architectural vibrance to Newtown's suburban centre. It is fitting with Wellington's art culture and with future developments could have the possibility of extensions or changes to the lattice structure.
